Quick Answer
December to April offers the driest weather and is ideal for first-time visitors. However, May, June, and November are our favorite months — you get lower prices, fewer crowds, and the rainforest is incredibly lush. Morning weather is usually beautiful, with rain typically falling in late afternoon.
Costa Rica does not have traditional seasons like winter, spring, summer, and fall. Instead, we have two seasons: dry season (locally called "verano") from December to April, and green season (or "invierno") from May to November.
But here is what most travel websites will not tell you: Costa Rica has multiple microclimates. The Caribbean coast, for example, has different weather patterns than the Pacific. And the Central Valley (where San Jose is located) enjoys spring-like weather year-round.
Dry Season: December to April
The dry season is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica, and for good reason. The Pacific coast and Guanacaste region see almost no rain, temperatures are warm (but not oppressive), and roads are in their best condition.
Pros of Visiting During Dry Season
- Consistently sunny weather, especially on the Pacific coast
- Best conditions for beach activities and water sports
- Easier driving conditions (unpaved roads are accessible)
- Ideal for visiting Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula
Cons of Visiting During Dry Season
- Higher prices (20-40% more than green season)
- More crowded tours and national parks
- Hotels book up months in advance, especially December-January
- Landscape is drier and less green, especially in Guanacaste
Insider Tip
If you want dry season weather without peak season prices, visit in late April. Easter crowds have left, but the rains have not started yet. It is our secret sweet spot.
Green Season: May to November
Many travelers avoid the green season because they imagine constant rain. This is a mistake. In most of Costa Rica, mornings are sunny and pleasant. Rain typically arrives between 2-5 PM and lasts 1-3 hours. Then it clears up.
We actually prefer guiding tours during green season. The rainforest is at its most vibrant, waterfalls are spectacular, and wildlife is more active. Plus, you will have popular attractions almost to yourself.
Pros of Visiting During Green Season
- Significantly lower prices on hotels and tours
- Fewer tourists — more authentic experience
- Lush, vibrant landscapes perfect for photography
- More wildlife activity (many animals breed during this time)
- Better surfing on the Pacific coast
Cons of Visiting During Green Season
- Afternoon rain showers (plan indoor activities or relaxation time)
- Some remote roads become difficult to pass
- Caribbean coast can be very rainy in certain months
- September and October have the heaviest rainfall
What is Veranillo?
In July, Costa Rica experiences a mini dry season called "veranillo" (little summer). For 2-3 weeks, the rain decreases significantly. This is a fantastic time to visit with green season prices but better weather.

Best Time to Visit by Activity
Wildlife Watching
Best time: Year-round, but green season edges out dry season. Animals are more active when it is cooler and wetter. For specific wildlife:
- Sea turtles: July to October (Tortuguero), September to March (Pacific)
- Whale watching: August to October (humpback whales from Antarctica)
- Quetzals: March to June (breeding season in cloud forests)
- Sloths: Year-round, but easier to spot in dry season when trees have fewer leaves
Surfing
Pacific coast: May to November brings the biggest swells. Tamarindo and Nosara have consistent waves year-round. Caribbean coast: Best from December to March when the Pacific is at its calmest.
Hiking and Volcanoes
Best time: December to April. Trails are drier and less muddy. Volcano craters are more likely to be visible without cloud cover in the morning.
Rafting
Best time: June to October. Higher water levels mean more exciting rapids. The Pacuare River is world-class during green season.
Best Time to Visit by Region
Guanacaste and Pacific Northwest
The driest region in Costa Rica. Visit December to April for guaranteed sunshine. Green season can be very hot and humid here.
Arenal and La Fortuna
Rainy year-round (it is a rainforest!). February to April offers the best chance of seeing the volcano without clouds. But honestly, Arenal is magical in any season.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Misty and cool year-round — that is what makes it a cloud forest. January to Mayis slightly drier. Bring layers regardless of when you visit.
Caribbean Coast
Different weather pattern from the rest of Costa Rica. September and Octoberare actually the driest months here, while the Pacific coast gets heavy rain.
Manuel Antonio and Central Pacific
December to April is driest. Green season mornings are usually sunny, making it a great year-round destination.
Our Final Recommendation
After 15+ years of guiding tours in Costa Rica, here is our honest advice:
- First-time visitors who want guaranteed sun: Come in February or March
- Budget travelers: September and October offer the lowest prices
- Best overall value: May, June, or November — good weather, low prices, few crowds
- Families with kids: July during "veranillo" coincides with summer vacation
- Wildlife enthusiasts: September-October for turtles and whales
The truth is, there is no bad time to visit Costa Rica. Each season has its own magic. What matters most is choosing activities and regions that match the weather during your visit.
